Why Christianity Is Not A Religion

Christianity is not a religion but God’s way of life. This is the way every human being on earth should live their life, if they want to see God and spend eternity with Him.

Before the fall of man, man had unrestricted fellowship with God and unhindered access to God’s presence, power and glory; and man was living a Christian life; God’s kind of life until man fell from God’s glory due to sin.

As a result of man’s fall, he died spiritually and lost that eternal life, God’s kind of life which is what Christ brought back to the world. But before God could restore man to his original plan and way of life which He designed for man, He had to send his Word in the person of His Son Jesus Christ to man in order to teach and restore man back to God’s kind of life, which is what Christianity is all about.

That is why scripture affirms in John 3:16 that God sent His only begotten Son to the world, because of his great love for mankind, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

This everlasting life is what Christianity is. It was brought by Jesus Christ as a gift to humanity in order to save them from their destructive sinful way of life and restore them back to the will of God, the eternal life which is what Christianity (living like Christ) brings to us.

The followers of Jesus Christ were first called by this Holy name Christians in Antioch, because people saw that they were behaving like Jesus Christ and not because they believe in Jesus. Your behaviour shows your beliefs; you act on what you believe in, [Acts 11: 22-26].

Christianity Is Not Just Believing In Jesus Christ

So there is a big difference between a believer and a Christian. Today, we have many believers but few Christians. Believing alone cannot save a person because the Bible says that even the devil believes and trembles, [James 2:19].

What will save a man is not just believing in Jesus Christ or that there is one God, but living and behaving like Jesus Christ which is Christianity. This is because if you believe in Jesus Christ, you will also do his commandments and keep His Word. That is why Jesus said that anyone that loves him should Keep his commandment, because the only proof that you actually love him is obeying his Word. He loved God the Father and proved his loved for Him by keeping His commandments. So, ‘’To Know is to Do, as to Believe is to Obey’’, [John 14:15-21]; [John 15:10].

Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life and no one can come to God except through Him behaving and living like Christ Jesus (living a Christian life). So if you believe in Him, you will also live the way he lived and commanded all those who believe in him to live, [John 14:6].

Christianity is one of the mysteries of God. Someone can actually be a believer without being a Christian, the Word of God proved this in many instances in the Bible, from Judas who betrayed the Lord, to Ananias and Sapphira, to Simon, the sorcerer in Samaria, all are examples of believers who were not Christians; this is called ‘’Conversion without Conviction’’, or what you would call ‘’Present Day Christianity’’ or ‘’Believing without the Holy Spirit’’.

Looking at the life of Simon, the magician in Samaria during the ministry of Philip in  Acts 8:9-14-24. From these scriptures, we could see that Simon, the sorcerer became a believer and was baptized and continued in the Church of Samaria with Philip. So he was a baptized believer, a member of the Church, a church goer and attended all church activities, but one thing was lacking, he was not a Christian because he lacked the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is so important to a believer, that without Him, no one can actually live a righteous life, and obey the Word of God, and have everlasting life. The Church is Samaria received the Word of God, they were born again because they accepted Christ but they did not receive the Holy Spirit which is the empowerment to live like Christ, in order words, they lack the power to be a Christian.

This was why Peter and John were specifically sent to them in Samaria by the church in Jerusalem, so that they can receive that power to become Christian, ie. the power to be like Christ by receiving the Holy Spirit. Therefore, a believer can only become a Christian with the help of the Holy Spirit. Without the Holy Spirit, you are just a believer and even the devils believe. [Matthew 8:28-29].

This is because a believer without the Holy Spirit can easily go astray and fall away from the Truth. Jesus validated the above statement in John 14:26, he says that the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in his name, will shall teach us believers all things, and bring all things to our remembrance, whatsoever he had said unto us.

He also said in John 15:26, that when the Comforter comes, whom he will send unto us from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceeds from the Father, that he shall testify of him.

The Holy Spirit was sent from the Father through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ for our sins, and to testify of the Son of God, who is the Only Way to God, the Truth about the Will, the Mind and the Word of God, and the Life of God, the eternal (everlasting) life, which is the foundation and the entire structure of Christianity.

So without the Holy Spirit, one cannot be a Christian, even though he believes, because the Holy Spirit is the seal of our salvation. He is the testifier and the interpreter of the Word of God (the way of life). He is the revealer and the reminder of the Will and Mind of God, (that God’s way of life which is Christianity) according to God’s Word and not according to the standard of the world.

Jesus is the vine, we are the branches: anyone that abides in him, and he in the person, the same brings forth much fruit: for without him, we can do nothing, John 15:5. So, No believer can actually live a Christian life without the Holy Spirit. He is a believer’s passport to Heaven. He is the one that turns a believer into a Christian.
